The English protestors were called "Luddites". They were worried that they would lose jobs because of machines. This has happened ever since, especially in England with the trade unions. They have always opposed any kind of increased efficiency on the grounds that workers may get fired - they took no account of the fact that the business would go bankrupt if it did not increase efficiency and they would ALL lose their jobs. This happened with the biggest ship-builder in England over 30 years ago.
